Red Lions take gold at Hockey World Cup

Belgium’s national men’s hockey team the Red Lion has won the final of the FIH Hockey World Cup in the Indian city of Bhubaneswar. The Belgian claimed victory against The Netherlands after an exciting shoot-out. The shoot-out followed a goalless four quarters.    

The first two quarters showed both teams defend strong with the only threat coming from Dutch penalty corners. However, these weren’t well and the score remained goalless. However, De kerpel and Briels failed to score.

A shoot-out was required. 

There were two big chances for the Red Lions to break the deadlock during the fourth quarter. A shoot-out was required and this proved to be a true nail-biter. Belgium were 0-2 behind at one point.

Van Aubel and De Sloover brought the Belgians back on level terms. De Sloover appeared to have scored the winning goal for the Red Devils.

However, it was disallowed as it the ball had touched his foot. However, Van Aubel found the back of the net and the last Dutch strike went over goal. This meant that Belgium had won the shoot out by 3 goals to 2 and became World Hockey Champions for the first time.
