The Leonard Tunnel

“Serious disruption” in and around the Leonard Tunnel from Wednesday evening

The Flemish Highways and Traffic Agency (AWW) warns of “serious disruption” for motorists in and around the Leonard Tunnel at Tervuren in Flemish Brabant. The tunnel is at the intersection of the Brussels Orbital Motorway (R0) and the E411 Brussels to Luxembourg motorway. The steel support pillars in the tunnel are being replaced.

Work to renovate the tunnel complex that forms the intersection between the two motorways got under way last month. A contractor has been working on the walls at the entrance and exit to the tunnel on the Brussels Orbital (R0) and this has already resulted in disruption to traffic.

However, now AWV warns of "serious disruption”  from this evening (Wednesday 8 May) until the evening of Monday 20 May. The contractor will take advantage of the two long weekends (Ascension and Whitsun) to carry out work on the tunnel’s steel support pillars. AWV says that after 50 years the pillars are showing signs of wear and tear.

The Flemish Highways and Traffic Agency says that the work is being carried out during and between the Ascension and Whitsun holiday weekends as “there is less traffic on the roads”.
