AA Gent’s Play –off I dreams still alive after 2-1 win

In the first of this weekend’s Belgian First Division games AA Gent enjoyed a 2-1 home win against Standard de Liège on Friday evening. With three games left to play, the result keeps alive AA Gent’s hopes of finishing in the top 6 and earning a place in Play-off.

AA Gent pushed forward from the outset with Dommé looking dangerous in front of goal early on. On 20 minutes David dribbled past the Standard defence only to see his somewhat weak shot saved by Ochoa. AA Gent’s well-deserved opening goal came on 39 minutes through Sørloth. The home side went two-up 3 minutes later and the half ended 2-0 to the Buffaloes.

The second half was less exciting than the first. Sørloth shot over early on. Odjidia too had a good chance to make it 3-0 to AA Gent. At the other end Emond had a goal disallowed for off-side

In injury time Emond found the back of the net again. However, this was too little, too late for the visitors to pick up any points from the game. The result leave AA Gent 7th, level on points with 6th-placed Sporting Anderlecht who play on Sunday. Standard are 3rd with 46 points. However, they could slip back a place if RFC Antwerp beat KRC Genk on Sunday evening.
