Vincent Kompany’s father to be Speaker of Brussels Parliament
The father of the former Manchester City Captain Vincent Kompany with act as Speaker during the first sitting of the new-elected Brussel Regional Parliament on 11 June. At 71, Pierre Kompany (Francophone Christian democrat) is the oldest member of the parliament that was elected on 26 May. Tradition decrees that in the parliament of the Brussels-Capital Region it is the oldest MP elected that acts as Speaker during the first sitting of the new legislature.
He will be assisted by two deputy-speakers. These are the youngest MPs from the Dutch and Francophone language groups respectively. Mr Kompany will remain Speaker until a new Brussels regional government is formed.
As well as being a regional MP Pierre Kompany is Mayor of the Brussel municipality of Ganshoren. The job of Speaker during the first sitting is an important one as it is then that the newly-elected MPs swear the oath that is necessary for them to officially become members of the regional parliament.
The length of Mr Kompany’s tenure as Speaker will depend on how long it takes to form a new regional government in Brussels. On Friday the Flemish greens, liberals and socialists announced that they had reached an agreement. Talks among the Francophone parties for the formation of their side of the coalition got under way on Monday.
