VUB Rector Caroline Pauwels has stomach and oesophageal cancer

The woman at the head of Brussels Dutch-medium Free University has got stomach and oesophageal cancer. The news that Rector Caroline Pauwels is suffering from cancer was announced in a press statement issued by university on Monday morning.  

Caroline Pauwels will undergo an intensive programme of treatment. While this is ongoing, Romain Meeusen and the university’s other Vice-Rectors will take over Rector Pauwels’ duties.

In a short statement Caroline Pauwels has asked for her privacy and privacy of her family to be respected during this difficult period.   

Caroline Pauwels is a communication science lecturer. She became Rector of the VUB in 2016, succeeding Paul De Knop. She has just turned 55.
