Wins for Genk, Antwerp and Sint-Truiden
Four of this weekend’s eight Belgian First Division games were played on Saturday evening. It was a good evening for the two First Division Clubs from Limburg Province with victories for both KRC Genk and Sint-Truiden. Royal Antwerp FC too enjoyed a 3-1 home win against Cercle Brugge. The match between Waasland-Beveren and Excel Mouscron ended in a 1-1 draw.
In the 6pm kick-off Sint-Truiden enjoyed a 0-3 win away at Sporting Charleroi. The Canaries took the with a first half goal from Yuma Suzuki on 34 minutes. Although the visitors looked as though they might break under the pressure applied by Sporting Charleroi early in the second half, they managed to stand their ground.
Sint-Truiden were awarded a penalty after Dessoleil handled the ball inside the box. Jordan Botaka scored from the penalty spot and it was 0-2 to Sint-Truiden. Yohan Boli made it 0-3 in the first minute of injury time. The result sees Sint-Truidden move up to 10th place with 11 points from 8 games. Sporting Charleroi are 8th, also with 11 points.
Genk put European humiliation behind them
After Tuesday’s Champions League debacle, KRC Genk were keen to give their fans something to cheer about and that’s just what they did. The Limburgers beat KV Oostende 3-1 on Saturday evening. Genk took the lead on 16 minutes thanks to an own goal by KV Oostende’s Vargas. Sylla put the visitors on level terms on 32 minutes.
Genk went 2-1 up a minute before half time thanks to an Onuachu goal. In the second half Coucke produced an important save to deny Jonckheere an equaliser on 78 minutes. A late goal by Sander Berge made for a final score of 3-1 to KRC Genk. The result leave KRC Genk 7th with 13 points from 8 games. KV Oostende are 11th with 10 points.
Victory for the Great Old
Royal Antwerp FC’s 3-1 home win leaves them with 15 points from 7 games, a good start to the season for Belgium’s oldest football club. Cercle had a goal disallowed after 4 minutes of play. Lamkel Zé scored Antwerp’s first goal of the evening on 20 minutes.
However an Arslanagic own goal on 35 minutes saw the visitors draw level. A goal from Dieumerci Mbokani on 55 minutes and a second Lamkel Zé goal on 69 minutes proved more than enough to ensure Antwerp of victory. Cercle remain in the doldrums with just 3 points from 8 games the West Flemings are 14th in the table.
One-all draw not enough for Waasland-Beveren
Excel Mouscron missed on the chance to go top (for 18 hours at least), only managing a 1-1 draw away at bottom club Waasland-Beveren. Aleix Garcia put Mouscron ahead on 32 minutes.
However, a 72nd minute goal by Jur Schryvers saw Waasland-Beveren draw level. The result leaves Waasland-Beveren still bottom with 3 points from 8 games. Excel Mouscron have 15 points from 8 games.
