East Flemish derby ends in draw

Despite being 2-0 at one stage Sporting Lokeren were unable to secure their first victory against near-neighbours AA Gent. Friday evening’s East Flemish derby ended in a 2-2 draw, a result that neither helps AA Gent in their quest to climb up into the top 6 nor helps Sporting Lokeren pull away from the bottom of the league.

Lukáš Marecek opened the scoring for Lokeren on the stroke of half time. The match seemed to be pretty much done and dusted for the home side when Medhi Terek put Lokeren 2-0 up on 65 minutes. However, AA Gent weren’t prepared to go down without a fight and two late goals, from Sigurd Rosted on 85 minutes and Dylan Bronn on 89 minutes, saw the game end in a 2-2 draw.

The result sees Sporting Lokeren move up to 15th place (out of 16), but only by virtue of the fact that they have won 1 game more than the team that is 16th Waasland-Beveren. Both Sporting Lokeren and Waasland-Beveren have 11 points.

However, Waasland-Beveren have a game in hand. They will take on KAS Eupen in Eupen on Sunday evening. AA are 7th with 25 points from 17 games. The Buffaloes could slip back a place though depending on the result of Saturday evening’s game between Sporting Charleroi and Cercle Brugge.
