Six thefts a day in Belgian hospitals

During 2017 there were more than 2,000 thefts from hospitals in Belgium. The figures appear in an article in the medical journal ‘De Specialist’ come from the Federal Police Service. This means that on average there are 6 thefts in Belgian hospital every day.  

Flanders tops the list with 978 thefts having taken place in Flemish hospitals in 2017. There were 755 thefts in Walloon hospitals and 530 thefts in hospitals in the Brussels-Capital Region, bringing the total for the country as a whole to 2,263.  

1,188 thefts were of money and credit cards.  533 mobile phones were stolen and 195 computers (laptops, notebooks and tablets) were taken.

The figures only show the number of thefts reported to the police. ‘De Specialist’ believes that the real figure to be much higher.
