French girl seriously injured in go-cart ride

A 3-year-old French girl is receiving the best treatment in hospital after she was badly hurt driving down a flight of steps in a go-cart on the seafront in Ostend.

The girl from Mâcon in France was holidaying in Ostend together with her family.  The events happened at the Seafarer’s Monument around 8PM on Saturday night. The family had hired go-carts for several children.  It went wrong when she drove down a steep flight of steps on the seafront.  The girl was catapulted out of the go cart and ended up beneath its wheels.  Immediately it was clear that this was a serious incident.

Police commissioner Katrien Jonckheere: “The child was taken to the children’s ward of Ghent University Hospital with serious injuries. Her brother sustained light injuries.  Ostend police’s victim support unit is assisting the family.”
