E314 motorway partially closed until Monday as heat damages road surface

A stretch of the E314 motorway at Aarschot in Flemish Brabant will remain partially closed until Monday morning after road surface became damaged due to the heat. Two lanes of the motorway are affected. The Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency is working flat out to try and repair the damage.

However, the tarmac is taking longer than normal to set because of the heat. The damage is on the Brussels-bound carriageway on the road. The road surface started to crack on Thursday afternoon that there is a crack of around 12 metres spread over 2 lanes of the road.

"The crack is too large to repair with cold asphalt and we will try and repair it with normal tarmac. However, it is taking longer for it to dry than we had expected. Today’s high temperatures mean that we won’t be able to reopen the road until after the weekend”.  A 70km/h speed restriction is in place on affected stretch of motorway.
