Locals evacuated after bomb is found in Ostend

Local residents have been evacuated after a Second World War bomb was unearthed in the port area of the West Flemish city of Ostend. Everyone within a 250 metre radius has been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

This includes the residents of two large blocks of flats on the Hendrik Baelskaai. All those evacuated have been taken to the Duin and Zee holiday centre a few streets away.

A crisis coordination centre has been set up at Ostend Town Hall. The police, the fire service and the bomb disposal service DOVO are at the scene. DOVO’s bomb disposal experts are now trying to dismantle the bomb.
