A Belgian military helicopter based at Koksijde in West Flanders was called out to mount a rescue operation above the North Sea in the early hours of Monday morning. A French fishing boat with a crew of five on board had run into trouble off the French port of Dunkirk and the Belgian helicopter was tasked with rescuing the crew.

The French authorities told the press agency AFP that the boat had ran into trouble around 30 kilometres from the coast.

The five crew members were winched to safety before being flown to Ostend (West Flanders)

A spokesperson for the French maritime authorities told AFP that none of the fishermen had been injured in the incident.
