Bike thrown onto rail power lines in Brussels

An as yet unidentified individual threw a bike onto overhead rail powerlines outside Bockstael station in Brussels this morning.  The incident halted all rail traffic between the main Brussels stations and Jette.

The bike was thrown onto the overhead cables shortly before 7AM.  Rail traffic in both directions was halted between Brussels and the borough of Jette.  Rail track operator Infrabel urged commuters to switch to existing bus lines.

Infrabel staff pulled out all the stops to get services up and running again as soon as possible.  Spokesman Thomas Baeken was nearly speechless: "I'm utterly surprised.  This is not acceptable.  I can't fathom why anybody would wish to commit vandalism of this kind.  It disrupts the lives of thousands of people."
