David Goffin only stopped by giant Medvedev in Cincinnati: "It's like playing against a wall"

Belgium's tennis ace David Goffin has lost his first Masters 1000 final in Cincinnati. The tall Russian Medvedev fired various aces to beat the small Belgian in straight sets: 7-6 (7/3), 6-4.

Goffin was the first Belgian to play a Masters 1000 final, a series just below the Grand Slams. The Belgian did well in the rallies, winning one after 29 strokes. However, in the end the service made the difference.

While Goffin had a double fault at a crucial moment in the first set tie-break, Medvedev fired no fewer than three aces when he was 15-40 down serving for the match, at 5-4 in the second set. "I made four serves that he didn't return and three of them were aces. It's just unbelievable", Medvedev told reporters.

Goffin is without a victory since his wonder year 2017, but missed a lot of tournaments through injury afterwards. He admitted that Medvedev, who had beaten Novak Djokovic in the semis, played a strong match: "He played unbelievable the last three weeks. He's super solid. He doesn't miss. It's like playing against a wall. That's why everybody is struggling, because he's so consistent, now with more confidence."

This being said, both players look ready for a strong US Open.
