Supporters from FC Antwerp not welcomed in the Netherlands : 19 people arrested
A modest number of Antwerp fans made the trip to Enschede in the Netherlands on Thursday. They knew that they were not welcome. The police eventually arrested 18 Antwerp citizens during the many checks in and around the city.
The football match AZ-Antwerp took place last night in the stadium of FC Twente, in Enschede. Supporters from Antwerp were not welcome, neither in the city nor in the stadium.
Nevertheless, several messages were sent on social media to "massively" come to Enschede. That call was largely in deaf ears, because when it came to the crunch, only a few dozen Antwerp fans turned out to be on the spot.
It remained relatively quiet in Enschede, both at the stadium and in the centre of the city.
The police had been called up to check the cars entering the stadium and dozens of cars with a Belgian licence plate were stopped.
A total of 19 people were arrested during the checks. Four of them were carrying gloves filled with sand, one had a baseball bat and the other 14 had to come along because they ignored the instructions of the police. The 14 had been sent out of town at a first warning, but had returned.
Regarding the result of the game, AZ and Antwerp finished with a 1-1 draw. There were 4,000 people in the stadium, which can accommodate more than 30,000 spectators.
