Elderly couple victims of home invasion: locked in basement and found only hours later

An elderly couple from Kapellen (Antwerp Province) became the latest victims of a home invasion. The two elderly people, aged 78 and 80, were locked in their basement and only found many hours later by neighbours. There is no trace of the perpetrators.

The home-jacking took place in Kapellen last Saturday night. The lady of the house visited the loo around 3AM. When she went back to the bedroom, she was confronted by 2 home invaders. She and her partner were gagged and locked in the basement.

The burglars then searched the house and fled off. Exactly what they were able to take off with is not yet entirely clear. Presumably it was money.

The victims spent the rest of the night in the basement. They were freed around 9 a.m. after a neighbour heard their calls for help. Both elderly people were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The investigation into the events is ongoing and the perpetrators are being tracked down.
