Ghost driver causes multiple pile-up, tests positive for alcohol

A ghost driver caused an accident in Melsbroek (Steenokkerzeel – Flemish Brabant) early this morning that eventually involved six vehicles. As if by miracle, nobody was injured. The driver submitted a positive breath test.

The accident happened around 6.20am on the Haachtsesteenweg, heading towards Brussels. A driver drove his vehicle in the wrong direction and collided with 6 vehicles, including several vans. One of the vans overturned blocking the road. As luck would have it, no one was hurt.

How exactly the accident could happen is not yet clear, but a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office confirmed that the driver tested positive for alcohol.

The Haachtsesteenweg remained closed all morning between the fly-over on Luchthavenlaan and the traffic lights in Steenokkerzeel. A diversion was in place.  “Fortunately, all in all the disruption is not too bad," says police spokesman Jens Van den Troost. “We have to wait until investigators have finished their job and the road is cleared before it can be reopened”.

"Disruption is considerable," explained Mayor Kurt Ryon. "There is debris and car wrecks everywhere. One car is definitely a total loss. It's a miracle no one was injured. It’s still unclear what exactly happened."
