“We thought we’d been liberated, but the Germans came back”

In September 1944 Allied forces advanced trough Belgium. Day by day British, Canadian and American troops liberated more and more of the country from German occupation. On 10 September Geel (Antwerp province) was liberated. However, the joy was short-lived as the Germans returned just a couple of days later. What followed was one of the bloodiest battles of the liberation of Belgium. 1,100 people died in The Battle of Geel.
