Light aircraft crashes near to the E40 motorway in Landen
A light aircraft has crashed near to the E40 motorway at Landen in the extreme east of Flemish Brabant. The pilot was trying to make an emergency landing when the plane crashed to the ground in the village of Walshoutem. After crashing the light aircraft caught fire. Debris was strew over two lanes of the motorway. The two people that were in the aircraft have been taken to hospital. The cause of the accident is not yet known
The crash happened at 2:45pm on Wednesday. The two men on board the aircraft were taken to Leuven University Hospital.
The Landen Fire Service extinguished the burning plane. Two lanes of the E40 have been closed while debris is cleared. Although the high speed rail link between Leuven (Flemish Brabant) and Liège is next to the where the plane came down, the company that maintains and manages Belgium’s rail infrastructure Infrabel says that rail services have not been impacted.
