Rush-hour misery after lorry transporting crane over turns

Motorists are advised to avoid the E40 motorway between Ghent and Brussels after a lorry transporting a crane overturned at Wetteren in East Flanders. Three lanes of the Brussels-bound carriageway are closed. The VRT traffic expert Hajo Beeckmans says to “Avoid the area as the problems could continue for some time yet”.  At around 9am there was a traffic jam tailing back around 7km.

The accident happened at around 8am. A lorry that was transporting a large crane overturned at Wetteren, around 10km southeast of Ghent.

"Salvage teams with need a lot of material and need a lot of time to clear the road. It could even take several hours”, Hajo Beeckmans told VRT News.

Traffic is gridlocked on the Brussels-bound  E40. Those wishing to travel from Ghent to Brussels are advised to take the E17 and drive to the A12 via Temse (East Flanders). However, work on the Scheldt Bridge in Temse means that there could well be delays along this route too. Another option is to drive via Antwerp or to take the train.
