Weather warning: code yellow for thunderstorms in parts of the country

The Met Office has issued a code yellow weather warning affecting the east and north of the country, due to risk of thunderstorms with a chance of hail and/or a lot of rain in a short period of time. People with storm or water damage can seek help from the emergency services via the e-counter or call the number 1722.

Showers and thunderstorms that may turn heavy in places are expected this afternoon, first over the east and later also over the north and centre of the country. A lot of rain may fall in a short period of time with hail possible too. Highs fluctuate between 14°C and 20°C along the French border and in the Ardennes, and between 20°C and 23°C in  the Kempen District.

The Met Office has issued a code yellow weather warning for Brussels, Flemish Brabant, Antwerp, Limburg, Liège, Hainaut, Namur and Walloon Brabant. Locally, more than 20 mm of rain could fall in just an hour. The Met Office also says that the weather situation is "complex". Forecasts may still be adjusted at short notice.

1722 activated

The home affairs ministry has temporarily activated the 1722 number for people seeking assistance when there is no threat to life.  The number eases pressure on the emergency services' 112 number that should be called promptly when there is any threat to life. Assistance for storm or water damage from the fire brigade is available via the e-counter www.1722.be or call the number 1722.
