Self-driving bus now carrying passengers in Woluwe Park

The Brussels public transport company MIVB is trying out a new phase with its small, self-driving bus, SAM-e. This time, passengers can get on board. The small bus can carry 6 to 12 passengers. It only goes slowly, at walking pace, in Woluwe Park where it should only take account of pedestrians and cyclists. However, SAM-e still has problems with unexpected non-moving obstacles.

In a next phase, the little bus will venture out on an industrial estate, where it will not only encounter pedestrians and cyclists, but also cars, says MIVB spokeswoman An Van Hamme. Self-driving buses on public roads, in our capital, are not something of the near future, but experts agree that this day will come sooner or later.
