Zone 30 to become the norm across the Brussels Region
The new Brussels regional government has unveiled the main planks of its programme for the next five years. A 30 km/h speed limit is being introduced as the norm across the region starting 2021.
The Flemish greens, liberals and the social democrat list One.Brussels-SP.A are teaming up with the Francophone socialists, greens and the Brussels democrats of DéFi. Francophone socialist Rudi Vervoort succeeds himself as the Brussels PM.
In future 50km/h will become an exception in Brussels. The Brussels politicians will now draw up a list of roads where 50 km/h will still be allowed. Brussels will also become climate neutral by 2050. In addition to ecological measures the new accord also contains many social elements. All jobless youngsters are guaranteed a job or a traineeship within six months.
Brussels is to get its first minister of multilingualism too, a key Flemish liberal demand. He or she will promote multilingualism in education and beyond. The tax on buying a first home will be cut too.
Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) and Sven Gatz (Flemish liberal) are expected to be the new Flemish ministers in the Brussels administration. Pascal Smet of One.brussels-SP.A is expected to become a junior minister.
Party conferences are staged tonight to allow the various parties to endorse their participation in government. Ministers and junior ministers could be sworn in as early as Thursday.
