Banner hung in front of nationalist leaders home “Don’t forget 810,000 voters”
Activists have hung a banner on the fence in front of the home of the leader of the Flemish nationalist party N-VA, Bart De Wever’s home in the Antwerp district of Deurne. No one has yet claimed responsibility for hanging up a banner with the inscription “Don’t forget 810,000 voters” on Sunday night.
810,000 is the number of votes gained by the far-right party Vlaams Belang at the elections to the Flemish Parliament on 26 May.
In recent days there has been much speculation about the talks on the formation of a new Flemish coalition government. As the leader of the biggest party in the Flemish Parliament, Mr De Wever is leading the talks. At the end of last week it was rumoured that Mr De Wever plans to exclude Vlaams Belang from any further talks and that it soon would become clear which parties the nationalist will want to take on board to form a new Flemish government. However, there has been radio silence from Mr De Wever all weekend.
Last week a leading figure in Vlaams Belang, Filip Dewinter, warned Mr De Wever not to scrap his party from the list of potential coalition partners. Mr Dewinter said that if Mr De Wever did so “we (Vlaams Belang) we become his biggest enemies”
The most likely coalitions for a new Flemish government are either Burgundian (nationalist, liberal and socialist) or a continuation of the so-called “Swedish coalition” made up of the nationalist, Christian democrats and liberals.
