Two teenagers dead and 2 injured in microcar smash

A 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman are dead following a serious accident involving a microcar and an SUV in St Genesius-Rode outside Brussels.

The microcar, a quadricycle, was involved in a smash with an SUV, a 4-wheel-drive vehicle.  Two people are dead and two others, who were in the rear of the microcar are injured.  Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the crash and a traffic expert has attended the scene.  Four people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident, while only two at most are allowed in this type of vehicle by law.  Public prosecutors say that two 16-year-olds in the microcar where seated in the boot and were not wearing a seat belt. The driver is among the two killed.

First indications point to the vehicle, an Aixam, suddenly swerving to the left triggering the accident.  The Volvo SUV was then unable to avoid it.

A microcar is a vehicle designed to less stringent requirements than a regular car and can be driven with a licence for a scooter.

The accident happened at 2AM last night on the Steenweg op Waterloo in Sint-Genesius-Rode (Flemish Brabant).   Four girls and women aged 15 to 18 were in the microcar.  Two were catapulted out of the vehicle, while two others were trapped in the microcar and needed to be freed by firefighters.

The driver of the SUV sustained light injuries.
