Van Aert forced to pull out of the Tour de France after fall
The Fleming Wout van Aert has been forced to pull out of Tour de France after suffering a leg injury in a crash during the 13th stage, a 27.2-km individual time trial on Friday. The Belgian's foot clipped a barrier on a right-hand bend. He was attended to by race medics before being taken away in an ambulance.
In a statement released shortly after the 24-year-old left for hospital Wout van Aert’s Jumbo-Visma team said "Wout van Aert unfortunately has to abandon the race after his crash. He is conscious and has a flesh wound at his right upper leg," his Jumbo-Visma team said.
The incident brings to an end a promising Tour debut for the 24-year-old's where he had secured a stage win on Monday, where he ousted Elia Viviani and Caleb Ewan in an explosive sprint finish.
