Club Brugge beat Dynamo Kyiv in Champions League, but job far from finished
Belgian runners-up Club Brugge boosted their hopes of making it into the Champions League group phase, after beating Dynamo Kyiv 1-0 in their home leg. However, they still have to travel to the Ukraine next week.
A Hans Vanaken penalty in the first half sealed it for Club Brugge. However, newly-arrived coch Philippe Clement, who left champions KRC Genk to join his former club FC Bruges this summer, knows the job is not finished: "1-0 is a good result. But we will have to be at our best in Kyiv", he says.
Newly-arrived goalkeeper Simon Mignolet (photo), who left Liverpool FC, kept a clean sheet: "This was important, and we managed it well. I am happy I could do my bit."
If Club Brugge oust Kyiv, they will face one more preliminary round, but not against a big name. Champions Genk are directly qualified for the group phase.
