Red Lions take a strong start in Antwerp

The Belgian national hockey team, the Red Lions, have won their opening game at the European championships in Antwerp 5-0. Opponents Spain had no chance against the Belgian World Champions.

After becoming World Champions, the Red Lions are eager to take their first European title as well before a home crowd. This brings extra pressure, but also extra motivation. How would the Lions deal with this situation? The opening game Spain was a first test, which they passed with ease.

Belgium first took a 2-0 lead, then had some trouble to keep the engine going, before steamrolling through in the last quarter of the game. Alexander Hendrickx, the corner kick specialist, scored two.

The Spanish goalkeeper prevented a higher score. Belgium will meet England next Sunday, but are already close to the next round.
