First Belgian womb transplant in Ghent

Specialists at Ghent University Hospital have performed the country's first womb transplant.  The operation involved surgeons from the women's clinic and the university's transplant centre.

"The operation went without incident and the woman patient is doing fine" Ghent University Hospital notes.  Without complications the patient could become pregnant within the year using IVF treatment.

The first womb transplant in Ghent forms part of a pilot.  Scientists are researching whether the womb of a brain dead donor can be transplanted into a patient with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome.

In Belgium fifteen women are born with this syndrome annually.  They possess no or an underdeveloped uterus or womb, but do have one or both ovaries.
