No trains on high speed line between Leuven and Liège
A cable theft has led to the closure of the high speed rail link between Leuven (Flemish Brabant) and Liège this Saturday morning. Thieves made off with a section of copper cable on the section of the high speed rail link at a location somewhere between Leuven and Hoegaarden (also Flemish Brabant).
The company in charge of the management and maintenance of Belgium’s rail infrastructure Infrabel told journalists that rail services that would usually use the high speed link, including Thalys and ICE trains to and from Germany, are being diverted via the old main line route between Leuven and Ans, near Liège.
As there is less rail traffic at the weekend delays to services are being kept to between 5 and 10 minutes.
Speaking earlier on Saturday morning Infrabel’s Frédéric Petit told journalists that "Our technical teams are carrying out repair work however it is still not clear when everything will be back to normal”.
