Major work in Brussels road tunnels during the summer months
Motorists in the west of Brussels can expect big delays to their journeys during July and August as two of the city’s busiest road tunnels will be closed to traffic for major repairs. Capacity on the Keizer Karellaan that runs from the Koekelberg Basilica to the E40 Brussels to Ostend motorway will also be halved as utilities companies carry out work there during the summer holiday period.
Belgium’s longest road tunnel, the 2.5 kilometre-long Leopold II Tunnel, that runs under the Leopold II-laan in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek and the Elisabeth Park in Koekelberg will be closed to traffic from the evening of Friday 28 June for major renovation work.
In preparation for this a one-way system will be introduced along the avenues that encircle the Elisabeth Park. This is to prevent traffic seeking alternatives routes through residential areas. The one way system will remain in force until Sunday 1 September.
The road that links the Leopold II Tunnel with the E40 motorway will also be subject to disruption during the summer vacation period. The utilities companies Vivaqua, Elia and Sibelga will commerce work to modernise their infrastructure along and under the Kezier Karellaan in Ganshoren and Sint-Agatha-Berchem.
This means that just one lane will be open to traffic heading towards the motorway. In the opposite direction some work will also be carried out leading to the closure of one of the two lanes. However, this work will be done outside of peak times. The work should have been completed before the beginning of September.
