Terrorist attack victims remembered
Three years to the day since the terrorist attacks at Zaventem Airport, near Brussels and in the Maalbeek Metro Station in the heart of the city, remembrance ceremonies have been held for the 32 people killed on 22 March 2016.
A minute’s silence was held at both locations. At Zaventem an acapella version of Amazing Grace was sung after the names of the victims that were killed in the attack there had been read out.
At the Maalbeek Metro Station a wall of remembrance was unveiled with names of the victims killed in the bomb attack on the station.
The moment of remembrance at the Maalbeek Metro Station took place at 9am. Around 100 people attended, listening to music and speeches from relatives of the 16 people that died there. From 9:30am victims of the Zaventem attack were remembered in the airport departure lounge.
At 9:55 the names of all 32 victims were read out simultaneously at the airport and the metro station. A moment of reflection was also held at the airport’s Memorial Garden. Members of the victim support associations Life 4 Brussels and V-Europe laid wreaths.
32 dead, 300 injured
32 people were killed in the two attacks on the morning of 22 March 2016. Three years later the trial of those involved has yet to start. The Federal Judicial Authorities hope that the trial will start next year. However, this is far from certain. Once the trial does get under way it is expected to last around 6 months.
