Fake ID outfit closed down in Brussels

Belgian police have dealt with a lab that was specialised in the production of false identity papers. The operation in the Brussels borough of St Gillis came to light as a result of raids carried out as part of the ongoing investigation into the terrorist threat on Belgian soil.

Brussels prosecutors say that the operation was not linked to any terrorist enterprise. It was last Thursday that investigators raided premises in the Vestingstraat. The suspect they were looking for was not present but in one of the flats they discovered the "professional" lab equipped with scanners and photocopiers. The operation that produced high quality fakes had been in operation for several months.

The Brussels police unit specialising in people-trafficking will continue the investigation. Police also encountered three asylum seekers in the flat but they were not linked to the counterfeiting outfit.
