10,000 motorists caught speeding in one week in Destelbergen: "Belgians just won't learn"

No fewer than 10,000 motorists were found driving too fast on the E17 Motorway in Destelbergen, near Ghent, where road works are taking place. The figures apply to just one week, but the road infrastructure agency says that only the drivers are to blame: "We have clearly announced the speed limits, but Belgians just won't learn".

The figures were listed by Het Nieuwsblad this morning. Road works at the E17 Motorway have been going on for weeks now, but last week a mobile speed camera was installed at the site. A speed limit of 50 km/h applies there, as lanes have become very narrow. 600 motorists exceeded the speed limit by far and can expect a police ticket as well.

Veva Daniëls of the "Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer" which is responsible for road infrastructure and road safety, says "speed limits at road works are very common. We have been calling on Belgians for months to respect those speed limits, but it seems that they will never learn." In the past, campaigns were launched to highlight the problem, and it's not the first time that speeding drivers at road works are making the headlines.

Veva Daniëls adds that "imposing a speed a limit of 50 instead of 70 km/h is a decision that is never taken lightly. The lanes are really narrow."
