Geriatric lobster Wesley dies aged 90

Sea Life Blankenberge is mourning the passing of one its best-known residents. Wesley, a Canadian lobster, was believed to be 90 years old. He was given to the centre that cares for a variety of aquatic creatures just three weeks ago by the owner of a restaurant.

Wesley was exceptionally big and it was this that saved him from the cooking pot. The lobster weighed 9kg. “Too big to cook” restauranteur Piet Devriendt of the Oesterput in Blankenberge told VRT Radio 2 West Flanders.

"I gave him away (to Sea Life) because I wanted to give him a better life than he would have had with me)”.

Cause of death: old age or stress?

It had been the intention that Wesley would carry on living for many more years. “We don’t know whether he has died of old age or due to the stress caused by moving or maybe because he was lonely”, Me Devriendt said.
