KRC Genk retain 4-point lead at the top

There were wins for KRC Genk and KAS Eupen in Sunday evening’s two Belgian First Division games. Genk enjoyed at 0-1 win away at Anderlecht, while Eupen won 1-0 at home against Waasland-Beveren.

The league-leaders KRC Genk retain their four-point lead at the top thanks to a second half goal by Aljeandro Pozuelo. The goal fell after 71 minutes of play. The match fall far short of expectations. The best chance of the first half fell to Anderlecht’s Santini. However, the Genk keeper Vukovic was on hand to deny the Croat.

The second half saw Anderlecht create few if any real chances. Genk too produced little of the attractive football that has become their hallmark this season.

Nevertheless, a scoring chance fell to the Limburger and their Spanish goal-getter Pozuelo was on hand to put them one-up 20 minutes from time. Gano came close to widening the score for Genk on a couple of occasions and a defensive blunder by Genk almost lead to an Anderlecht equalizer. However, it was not to be and the match ended 0-1 to Genk. KRC Genk remain top of the league with 38 points from 17 games. RSC Anderlecht are fourth with 30 points.

Waasland-Beveren bottom after defeat at Eupen

Waasland-Beveren finish the weekend bottom of the league after a 1-0 defeat at the hands of KAS Eupen. Yuta Toyokawa scored the only goal of the match for Eupen on 32 minutes. KAS Eupen move up to 11th place and have 19 points from 17 games. Waasland-Beveren are bottom of the league with 11 points.
