Man detained on suspicion of planning attack on US Embassy

The Federal Police detained a man on Saturday afternoon who is believed to have been planning an attack on the United States Embassy in Brussels. The security services had been shadowing the man for some time before his was detained. It is still unclear what exactly his plan were and why the decision was taken to arrest him on Saturday.

 

The Federal Judicial Police’s Anti-Terrorist Cell detained the man, a Belgian national, in the centre of Brussels. His suspicious behaviour had caught the attention of the security services that had been shadowing him. According to detectives he was planning to carry out the attack on the embassy in the near future.  

However, no details have been given about what exactly he was planning or why it was decided to arrest him on Saturday.

In the meantime an Examining Magistrate has detained the man on suspicion on suspicion attempting to carry out an attack in a terrorist context and preparing a terrorist crime. The suspect denies any wrong-doing.
