Hockey World Champions receive warm welcome on Brussels’ Market Square

The Belgian men’s hockey team has been given a hero’s’ welcome on Brussels’ Market Square. The Red Lions made history when they beat The Netherlands in the final of the FIH Hockey World Cup in the Indian city of Bhubaneswar on Sunday.     

Thousands of fans gathered on the square to great the World Champions.  Captain Thomas Briels and his teammates showed off the World Cup to the loud cheers of the crowd.   

The Belgian Airforce also honoured our hockey men with a four plane fly past.  

The Red Lions arrived back in Belgium at 6:45 on Tuesday morning when their plane landed at Zaventem Airport, near Brussels. Then it was off to the Royal Palace in Brussels where the team were congratulated by King Filip and Queen Mathilde.

Next stop was Brussels Town Hall where a reception was held in their honour.    

Belgium beat The Netherlands after a shoot-out. It is the first major title for our national men’s hockey team.
