Red Flames make light work of beating the Croats

Belgium’s national women’s football team the Red Flame enjoyed a comfortable 6-1 win in the opening match of their European Championships qualifying campaign in Leuven (Flemish Brabant) on Tuesday evening.

A particularly strong second half saw our women cruise to victory against Croatia.

The Red Flames’ next match is in Romania on 8 October.

The Croats put all their hopes into defence and it wasn’t until after 18 minutes of play that the Red Flames were able to break through their ring of steel. Cayman’s close range effort opened the scoring for the Belgians.

De Caigny made it 2-0 to Belgium on 44 minutes.

Coach Ives Serneels brought in an extra attacker in the shape of Vanmechelen for the second half. This proved to be a good move. Cayman made it 3-0 on 59 minutes and she completed her hat-trick 7 minutes later to make it 4-0. Deloose made it 5-0 on 74 minutes and the Red Flames went 6-0 up thanks to a Vanmechelen goal on 78 minutes.

The Croats scored a consolation goal through Lojna on 84 minutes to make for a final score of 6-1.
