23 new trams to enter service soon in Antwerp

The Flemish public transport company De Lijn has placed an order for 23 new low-floor trams. The new vehicles will replace some of the 105 trams that were built in 1960’s and are still running on routes across the port city.

The new trams should enter service in three years. De Lijn has yet to announce which routes will be served by the new trams.

Currently the 1960’s trams are still running on tram routes 2,4,7,8,10,11 and 70. From 2022, the each new of the larger new trams will replace two old trams. The low-floor trams are more easily accessible as their floor is at platform/pavement height.

De Lijn’s Tom Van de Vreken told VRT News that this has a number of benefits for passengers.

"The Trams are much more comfortable and thanks to their low floor passengers with a child in a buggy or people in wheelchairs will be able to get on and off the tram more easily. There will be enough room to accommodate wheelchairs”.
