Royals attend National Day Te Deum at Brussels Cathedral
The traditional National Day Te Deum was been celebrated at Brussels Cathedral on Sunday morning. Among those in attendance were King Filip, Queen Mathilde and their four children. Around a thousand people gathered outside the cathedral hoping to catch a glimpse of the King, Queen and the princes and princesses.
The religious ceremony makes the start of Belgium’s National Day celebrations. On their arrival the King and Queen were met with loud applause and cheering from those that had gathered outside the cathedral. They took time to great members of the public before going inside.
According to the police around 1,000 members of the public had turned up to greet the Belgian monarch and his family. Among those in attendance inside the cathedral were the Prime Minister in Belgium’s caretaker Federal Government Charles Michel (Francophone liberal) and ministers Koen Geens (Flemish Christian democrat), Didier Reynders (Francophone liberal), Pieter De Crem (Flemish Christian democrat) and Marie-Christine Marghem (Francophone liberal). The Speaker of the Chamber of Representatives Patrick Dewael (Flemish liberal) was also in attendance.
In his call to payer the Belgian Primate Archbishop Jozef De Kesel said to pray “for those that govern us”. "May God assist them and help them to work in the interest of all and in the interest of all the countries communities and citizens. May we ourselves work for a more humane and fraternal society, a society built on respect for and solidarity with others”.
