Driver who killed 14-year-old girl in a car accident was drunk
At the beginning of this week, a driver who killed a 14-year-old girl in Nieuwerkerken (East Flanders), was under the influence. According to the public prosecutor's office, there were no defects in the car and the driver was not on a mobile phone behind the wheel.
At the beginning of this week, a 14-year-old girl was killed in a serious traffic accident in Nieuwerkerken, near Aalst. Three other teenagers, including the driver, were injured.
The first results of the toxicological study now show that the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol. This is confirmed by the Public Prosecutor's Office of East Flanders. It is not known exactly how much promille alcohol was in his blood, no traces of drugs were found. The findings also show that the driver was not driving a mobile phone and that there were no technical defects in the car.
Earlier it had become clear that the driver had a provisional driving licence, but he was not actually allowed to drive at the time. In Belgium, a driver with a provisional driving licence may not drive from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), the same rules apply on the eve of a public holiday and on a public holiday itself.
