3 years suspended for woman who abandoned child

A woman from Genk (Limburg) has been sentenced to a three year suspended sentence after deserting her baby shortly after birth.  Three years ago the woman gave birth in her car and abandoned the child in a fruit plantation in Sint-Truiden.

The woman used a hair elastic band to bind off the umbilical cord and left the child in the orchard thinking fruit-pickers would find it. Fortunately, a driver of bus company De Lijn heard the child crying and took care of it.   Under the conditions of her probation the woman is obliged to seek guidance for psychological and financial problems.  The woman suffers from a Borderline personality disorder and has a narcissistic personality.  She is being treated for the condition and has access to the child once a month.  The child is staying with foster parents.
