Wins for KAS Eupen, Waasland-Beveren and Sporting Lokeren
Four of this weekend’s 8 Belgian First Division games were played on Saturday evening. Once again Club Brugge failed to match their (relatively) good performance in the group stage of the Champions’ League only managing a goalless draw away at KV Kortrijk.
Club Brugge had a goal disallowed after the referee saw on a video reply that a Club Brugge player had fouled opponent prior to the ball hitting the back of the net. With 19 games played Club Brugge are second with 35 points. KV Kortrijk are 9th with 22 points. They could slip back a couple of place though if Cercle
KAS Eupen pull ever further away from the drop spot
In previous seasons KAS Eupen have made a habit of being involved in the relegation battle until (almost) very last. However, this season they have managed to pull away from the teams hovering around the drop spot. Saturday evening's 1-0 win at home against Excel Mouscron served to widen the gap further. Pouraliganji scored the game’s only goal on 58 minutes. The 1-0 win means that KAS Eupen now have 22 points from 19 games and are 10th (although they could slip back a couple of places depending on Sunday’s results). Excel Mouscron are next to bottom with 14 points.
Shock victory for Waasland-Beveren
RFC Antwerp were hoping to retain second place in the league and on paper that should not have been a problem given that their opponent Waasland-Beveren was joint bottom before Saturday evening’s game. However, football can be full of surprises and goals by Louis Verstraete on 47 minutes and Apostolos Veillos in the 4th minute of stoppage time ensured Waasland-Beveren of a 0-2 victory against The Great Old. RFC Antwerp are now 3rd with 35 points from 19 games Waasland-Beveren are 14th with 17 points.
Lokeren on song against the Canaries
Another surprising result was Sporting Lokeren’s 2-0 home win against Sint-Truiden. Sint-Truiden have been the pleasant surprising of the season playing some good football. This has been rewarded with some good results and a place in the top 6. Goals by Marko Miric on 33 minutes and Medhi Terki on 84 minutes were enough to give Lokeren a 2-0 victory and ensure that Sint-Truiden lost their first league match since October. Sint-Truiden remain 5th with 31 points from 19 games. Sporting Lokeren are bottom with 14 points.
