An important victory for AA Gent

In Sunday afternoon’s Belgian First Division game AA Gent enjoyed at 1-3 victory away at Zulte Waregem. The win sees the Buffaloes move up to 6th place in the league. However, this could change if RSC Anderlecht beat Sporting Lokeren in Sunday evening’s 6pm kick-off. With just 2 games left AA Gent are still very much in the running for a place in Play-off I.

The match couldn’t have started better for the Buffaloes with Vadis Odjidja putting them 0-1 up after just 2 minutes of play. However, their joy was short-lived and Theo Bongonda equalized for Zulte Waregem 3 minutes later.

Things continued in same vein for the next quarter of an hour or so with end to end football played at a breakneck pace. Things calmed down a little after that with Zulte Waregem’s Harbaoui (photo below) having the only real chance of the rest of the half.

The second half started like the first with an early goal for the visitors. Jonathan David scored 4 minutes in for AA Gent.

Despite the promising start little more materialised and either end. Even Bongonda looked less sharp in the second half.

AA Gent brought in Verstaete on 56 minute and turned things up a gear in the hope of widening their lead. However, it wasn’t until the second minute of injury time that they succeeded in doing so when Sorloth put them 1-3 up. The result leaves AA Gent 6th with 44 points from 28 games. Zulte Waregem are 11th with 31 points.
