David Goffin has "big moment" in Cincinnati, sets a first
In tennis, David Goffin has qualified for the final in Cincinnati, becoming the first Belgian ever to do so. Goffin underlined his excellent form by beating Frenchman Richard Gasquet in straight sets. He will face Daniil Medvedev in the final of this prestigious Masters 1000 tournament, ranked just below the Grand Slam events.
Goffin seems to be back at his best after a long injury spell. Beating Gasquet 6-3, 6-4, he reached his first Masters 1000 final, also setting a first for Belgium. "It was a tough period", Goffin looked back upon his long injury spell, followed by a long comeback with ups and downs. "I was coming back from injuries and had some trouble with my confidence. I couldn't find my rhythm. So it's great. I'm feeling great. I'm back at my best tennis."
Goffin added that "I love this tournament and I played my best tennis here in recent years. I am very happy to reach a Masters 1000 final for the first time. To reach the final here, is a big moment for me."
In that final battle, Goffin will face Medvedev, who upset favourite Novak Djokovic is his semi-final, hitting 14 aces and second serves at 128 miles per hour (205 kilometres per hour). Medvedev reached the Montreal final last week, where he was beaten by Rafael Nadal.
