The Flemish Government removes an obstacle to the development of the port of Zeebrugge

The Flemish Government has removed a major obstacle to the development of the West Flemish port of Zeebrugge. On Friday Flemish Ministers approved a framework decree that will allow for the construction of a second lock and a road link to the port.

Zeebrugge is the second largest port in Belgium. However, the port remains vulnerable as the Vandamme lock is the only access points for vessels to the port’s inland harbour. A second access point would serve to bolster the port's future resilience.

The project for a new lock has been on the drawing board for years. It goes hand in hand with a project for the construction of a new road, part of which will be an underground tunnel, to separate port and transit traffic from local traffic. The lock and road plan is now ready to be put before a public enquiry.
