Central passenger tunnel at Ghent’s Sint-Pieters Station closed for 3 weeks

Belgium’s long-suffering travelling public faces a new challenge.  For the next three weeks public transport users at Ghent’s Sint-Pieters Station should expect disruption as the station’s central passenger tunnel is being closed for works.  Passengers who need to access tracks 1 and 2 will still be able to get to the platform via the central entrance hall, but a large proportion of passengers will have to take a diversion via the tram tunnel at the side of the station.

The diversion will operate via the tunnel between the bus station and the Koningin Mathildeplein at the rear of the station. Many are the platforms that can only be reached this way and that until 15 May, as the central passengers' tunnel will be closed.

"The tunnel between tracks 3 and 5 will be demolished as part of the renovation work at the station," explains Gisèle Rogiest, spokesperson for the Ghent-Sint-Pieters Project. "Passengers can only reach platforms 1 and 2 from the station's central hall. Platforms 3 to 12 can be accessed via the other passenger tunnel between the bus station and Koningin Mathildeplein."
