Part of a house has been destroyed by an explosion in the Limburg city of Genk. The side and back facade of the house on the Meeënweg were blown away by the explosion that is believed to have been caused by a gas leak. The occupant of the house was taken to hospital with burns.

The Genk Fire Service received a report of an explosion at around 0:20 on Sunday night. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they saw that part of the house had been blown away.

The occupant of the house sustained burns. A neighbour, Jessica Timmermans, told VRT News that she had been woken by to the commotion in the street. "The paramedics came to ask if they could put him in the shower to treat his burns, then they took him to hospital in Leuven. They were glad that we offered to help. It was quite a shock, having something like that happen so close by."

The area around the house has since been cordoned off, as there is a danger of collapse. The gas distribution company Fluvius has since cut of the gas supply to the damaged house.
