Railtrack doubles capacity on Ghent-Brussels new line
Belgium's long-suffering weekend rail passengers will heave a sigh of relief. After ten years of work the Belgian rail company has introduced two new tracks between Brussels and Denderleeuw. Henceforth four tracks will be available on the new line between Brussels and Ghent.
The line is the busiest in the nation. The extra tracks should result in smoother traffic and fewer delays.
The opening of the new tracks follows the conclusion of major rail infrastructure works between Anderlecht and Ternat. Fréderic Petit of the Belgian railtrack company Infrabel: "We've been working on it for ten years. Our aim is to improve rail traffic to and from Brussels."
Eleven bridges have been renovated along the new line. Over 200 services travel between Brussels and Denderleeuw every day. During the rush hour it's 25 trains an hour. The new tracks will ensure smoother traffic between Brussels and Denderleeuw, but it's also good news for passengers bound for Ghent and beyond!
